Quiet Symmetry

The striking hues of this Potea flower are emphasised through a considered composition, with the flowerhead centred in a top-down perspective. I introduced a subtle blur to the uppermost bracts, gently guiding the eye toward the central flower; emulating the intimate experience of bringing a bloom to your nose to appreciate its perfume.
Symmetry is found throughout nature. Primitive flowers such as the Protea exhibit multiple lines of symmetry, known as radial symmetry, whereas more recently evolved flowers typically possess a single mirrored line, or bilateral symmetry. The circular, radiating pattern that enables this bloom to replicate numerous lines of symmetry serves as a quiet recognition of the eighty-million-year history of the Proteaceae family to which it belongs.
